Block Talk is a social networking tool that allows users to connect with strangers in close geographic proximity while maintaining privacy and anonymity. This map-based mobile application permits text and picture notes to be left at specific locations. This platform can be used for a variety of purposes ranging from helpful tips for newcomers to passive aggressive notes for annoying neighbors.
I created Block Talk in 2012 when the social network landscape was very intent on identifying users and developing a graph of social connections. This hasn't necessarily changed, but there are some new networks available that use a simpler approach. In a way, my app could be viewed as an asocial network in that the emphasis is placed heavily upon the content of the message and not so much upon the actors in the exchange.
Block Talk is not currently active but I plan to bring the concept back with some major upgrades and improvements.
Always see the latest
Know what's happening in your immediate surroundings and communicate with people nearby. The most recently active messages are returned within the bounds of the map. Older messages are made available by zooming to a specific region.
Easily place new messages
Messages with images can be placed automatically by examining the EXIF information to extract GPS coordinates. Images are hosted on imgur and easily shared outside of Block Talk.
Be as specific as you want
Satellite view can be used to precisely place a message. The center crosshair marker is used to pinpoint the desired location and can be useful when your point of interest is not easily found on a roadway map.
Never miss a thing
If someone replies to a message you've created or previously replied to, you'll be sure to know about it with a notification icon and shortcut to all of your updated message threads.
